Surviving the heat (general guidelines)
Stay in the coolest environment available. Use an air conditioner if it is available. When using a fan, keep windows open on the shady side and use the fan to ventilate living quarters. Spend time in air conditioned public places if no air conditioning is available and temperatures are above 90 degrees.
drink plenty of cool water and other iced non- alcoholic and non- caffeine liquids
eat regularly, but eat light, easily digested food, avoiding hot, heavy meals. Limit cooking to keep indoor temperatures down.
Dress in loose- fitting, lightweight and light- colored natural fiber clothing. Wear a hat to protect your head from sun.
Limit activity in the middle of the day when temperatures are the highest. Adjust working hours for those working outdoors or in non air conditioned buildings whenever possible, and provide frequent breaks with plenty of fluids.
Bathe or shower frequently in cool water
If you have cardiovascular disease, do not increase salt or potassium intake without consulting your doctor. Check all medications with your doctor or pharmacist for increased risk of heat illness.
If you feel unusually weak, dizzy, or confused, call your doctor or 911.
Check regulary on elderly, chronically ill or incapacitated relatives, neighbors and friends who do not have air conditioning.
If you are age 60 or older , have been sick lately, or live alone without air conditioning, it is strongly recommended that you go to an air conditioned place for at least several hours each day when a heat warning is in effect.

The Railroad in Sequim

History is everywhere around Sequim, but some of it can only be found at the museum, historical references and in the memories of our pioneers. Aside from our pioneers there is little to help us remember the trains that used to travel through Sequim.

The railroad reached Sequim in 1915 and carried passengers from Port Townsend and Port Angeles. With the arrival of the railroad, Sequim became the agricultural marketing center of the Peninsula. Passenger service was ended in 1931 and continued to carry freight until 1986, when the Milwaukee line abandoned the railroad and the tracks were removed. Today the Sequim Bypass follows part of the rail line through town and the Olympica Discovery Trail utilizes much of the former right-of-way.

The federal government recently passed the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI), which requires a passport or other federally-approved identification or proof-of-citizenship document for all travel into the United States. To preserve travel, trade, and cultural ties with British Columbia and increase security at the border, the Washington State Department of Licensing is offering EDL/ID Cards to Washington residents who choose to participate. The EDL/ID meets federal requirements, and is an approved alternative to a passport for re-entry into the U.S at land and sea borders between the U.S., Canada, Mexico, Bermuda, and the Caribbean.

Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI) will go into effect June 1, 2009 for land and sea travel into the U.S. WHTI went into effect for air travelers on January 23, 2007.

Goodwill to accept electronics. (See article from the Sequim Gazette) Free recycling of TVs, computers, laptops and monitors will start Jan. 2 at Goodwill stores statewide. Goodwill will accept all electronic equipment — including keyboards, printers, other peripherals and cell phones. “We offer more than 40 free, convenient drop-off locations across western and southcentral Washington,” said Eric Hulscher, Goodwill operations manager overseeing the program. “Participating in the program is in keeping with Goodwill’s reduce, reuse and recycle efforts.” He added, “This is a permanent, ongoing program, not a one-day event.” A Goodwill store and donation center are located at 603 S. Lincoln St. in Port Angeles. For information about other Goodwill donation locations, go online to www.tacomagoodwill.org. Additional information about the statewide program is available online at www.ecyclewashington.org. E-Cycle Washington, created under a 2006 state law, provides for recycling of unwanted electronics products. Manufacturers are funding the project and the state Department of Ecology is monitoring the effort to ensure material is processed properly. Tacoma Goodwill is a certified collector in the program. In 2008, Goodwill provided job-training and placement services to 5,241 people with proceeds from gently used clothes and household items that are sold in Goodwill’s stores. Uses for WD-40 ... got this as an e-mail - are these all true?

Before you read to the end, does anybody know what the main ingredient of WD-40 is?

Who knew?

I had a neighbor who had bought a new pickup. I got up very early one Sunday morning and saw that someone had spray painted red all around the sides of this beige truck (for some unknown reason). I went over, woke him up, and told him the bad news. He was very upset and was trying to figure out what to do. Probably nothing until Monday morning, since nothing was open. Another neighbor came out and told him to get his WD-40 and clean it off. It removed the unwanted paint beautifully and did not harm his paint job that was on the truck. I'm impressed! WD-40 who knew?

'Water Displacement #40' The product began from a search for a rust preventative solvent and degreaser to protect missile parts. WD-40 was created in 1953 by three technicians at the San Diego Rocket Chemical Company. Its name comes from the project that was to find A 'water displacement' compound. They were successful with the fortieth formulation, thus WD-40. The Corvair Company bought it in bulk to protect their atlas missile parts. Ken East (one of the original founders) says there is nothing in WD-40 that would hurt you. When you read the 'shower door' part, try it. It's the first thing that has ever cleaned that spotty shower door. If yours is plastic, it works just as well as glass. It's a miracle! Then try it on your stovetop ... Viola! It's now shinier than it's ever been. You'll be amazed.

Here are some other uses:

01. Protects silver from tarnishing.
02. Removes road tar and grime from cars.
03. Cleans and lubricates guitar strings.
04. Gives floors that 'just-waxed' sheen without making them slippery.
05. Keeps flies off cows.
06. Restores and cleans chalkboards.
07. Removes lipstick stains.
08. Loosens stubborn zippers.
09. Untangles jewelry chains.
10. Removes stains from stainless steel sinks.
11. Removes dirt and grime from the barbecue grill.
12. Keeps ceramic/terra cotta garden pots from oxidizing.
13. Removes tomato stains from clothing.
14. Keeps glass shower doors free of water spots.
15. Camouflages scratches in ceramic and marble floors.
16. Keeps scissors working smoothly.
17. Lubricates noisy door hinges on vehicles and doors in homes.
18. It removes black scuff marks from the kitchen floor! Use WD-40 for those nasty tar and scuff marks on flooring. It doesn't seem to harm the finish and you won't have to scrub nearly as hard to get them off. Just remember to open some windows if you have a lot of marks.
19. Bug guts will eat away the finish on your car if not removed quickly! Use WD-40!
20. Gives a children's playground gym slide a shine for a super fast slide.
21. Lubricates gear shift and mower deck lever for ease of handling on riding mowers.
22. Rids kids rocking chairs and swings of squeaky noises.
23. Lubricates tracks in sticking home windows and makes them easier to open.
24. Spraying an umbrella stem makes it easier to open and close.
25. Restores and cleans padded leather dashboards in vehicles, as well as vinyl bumpers.
26. Restores and cleans roof racks on vehicles.
27. Lubricates and stops squeaks in electric fans.
28. Lubricates wheel sprockets on tricycles, wagons, and bicycles for easy handling.
29. Lubricates fan belts on washers and dryers and keeps them running smoothly.
30. Keeps rust from forming on saws and saw blades, and other tools.
31. Removes splattered grease on stove.
32. Keeps bathroom mirror from fogging.
33. Lubricates prosthetic limbs.
34. Keeps pigeons off the balcony (they hate the smell).
35. Removes all traces of duct tape.
36. Folks even spray it on their arms, hands, and knees to relieve arthritis pain.
37. Florida's favorite use is: 'cleans and removes love bugs from grills and bumpers.'
38. The favorite use in the state of New York, WD-40 protects the Statue of Liberty from the elements.
39. WD-40 attracts fish. Spray a little on live bait or lures and you will be catching the big one in no time. Also, it's a lot cheaper than the chemical attractants that are made for just that purpose. Keep in mind though, using some chemical laced baits or lures for fishing are not allowed in some states.
40. Use it for fire ant bites. It takes the sting away immediately and stops the itch.
41. WD-40 is great for removing crayon from walls. Spray on the mark and wipe with a clean rag.
42. Also, if you've discovered that your teenage daughter has washed and dried a tube of lipstick with a load of laundry, saturate the lipstick spots with WD-40 and rewash. Presto! The lipstick is gone!
43. If you sprayed WD-40 on the distributor cap, it would displace the moisture and allow the car to start.
44. Removes pricing labels adhesive, and tape adhesives.

P. S. The basic ingredient is FISH OIL.

WSDOT completes final Hood Canal Bridge pontoon float-ou

8-1-08 WSDOT is pleased to announce the final two pontoons for the east-half of the Hood Canal Bridge were floated out of the graving dock in Tacoma, Wash. Earlier today, pontoons U and W – the last of the bridge’s new 14 east-half pontoons – were towed by tugboats to Pier 6 at Todd Pacific Shipyard in Seattle. There the pontoons will be the pontoons will be connected and the superstructure and roadway will be added. WSDOT is focused on keeping this project on schedule and this major milestone will help us meet the May – June 2009 Hood Canal Bridge closure. Here’s how it happened:• 4:45 p.m.: The graving dock was flooded with water and the gates were removed• 5:15 p.m.: Pontoon U was towed out of the graving dock• 5:50 p.m.: Pontoon W was towed out of the graving dock• 6:30 p.m.: The pontoons were both clear of the graving dock and the gate was put back in place. How often do you let other people change your mood? Do you let a bad driver, rude waiter, curt boss, or an insensitive employee ruin your day? Unless you're the Terminator, for an instant you are probably set back on your heels. However, the mark of a successful person is how quickly she/he can get back her/his focus on what's important.

Five years ago I learned this lesson in the back of a taxi cab in Denver. Here's what happened:

I hopped in a taxi and we took off for the airport. We were driving in the right lane when suddenly a black car jumped out of a parking space right in front of us. My taxi driver slammed on his breaks, skidded, and missed the other car by just inches! The driver of the other car whipped his head around and started yelling at us. My taxi driver just smiled and waved at the guy. I mean that he was genuinely friendly. I asked, "Why did you just do that? That guy almost wrecked your car and sent us to the hospital!" This is when my taxi driver taught me what I now call, "The Law of the Garbage Truck".

He explained that many people are like garbage trucks. They run around full of garbage, full of frustration, full of anger, and full of disappointment. As their garbage piles up, they need a place to dump it and sometime they dump it on you. Don't take it personally. Just smile, wave, wish them well, and move on. Don't take their garbage and spread it to other people at work, at home, or on the streets.

The bottom line is that successful people do not let garbage trucks take over their day. Life is much too short to wake up in the morning with regrets, so ... "Love the people who treat you right. Pray for the ones who don't".

The one-year countdown to the May-June 2009 closure of the Hood Canal Bridge starts today.

The six-week closure will affect thousands of residents and visitors in the Olympic and Kitsap peninsulas, and as a result, WSDOT’s Hood Canal Bridge Project Team will be using these precious moments ramping up efforts to get the public ready for the construction project.
Through October, the team will staff information booths at events throughout the Olympic and Kitsap peninsulas to inform residents about the project’s construction progress and closure mitigation plan. The events will allow WSDOT to reach an even broader audience as it discusses everything from pontoon work to a water shuttle across Hood Canal, transit additions, medical bus services and ridesharing opportunities.
“This is a great opportunity to talk with the people this project serves,” said Theresa Gren, Hood Canal Bridge Project Communications Manager. “Attending these events will allow residents to chat one-on-one with project representatives. We’re very excited about that.”
Team members, who will attend 11 community events in Jefferson, Clallam, Mason and Kitsap counties, will kick off the closure outreach effort May 16-18 at Viking Fest in Poulsbo and finish Oct. 11-12 at the Dungeness Crab Festival in Port Angeles.
The Hood Canal Bridge retrofit and replacement project will improve the existing structure, making it wider, safer and more reliable. The bridge will close for six weeks during May-June 2009 to allow WSDOT and contractors from Kiewit-General to remove and replace its eastern half. Sequim's Blue Hole

Sequim, Washington, lies in a rainshadow (Blue Hole) where the annual rainfall has averaged around 16 inches per year over the past few years. This is about the same amount of precipitation as San Diego or Los Angeles. It is so dry in Sequim that irrigation is necessary to raise crops and keep the area green. In fact, Sequim's major festival is the annual Irrigation Festival held in May to commemorate the opening of the first irrigation ditches over 100 years ago. Yet, less than 50 miles away, on a bend in the Wynoche River, the rainfall is the heaviest in the United States, averaging over 150 inches annually.

Why does this happen?
When warm marine air from the Pacific Ocean reaches the Olympics, it is forced upwards and cooled. The cold air can't hold as much moisture as warm air and it rains. But, it is the west side of the mountains that gets the drenching. That cold dry air then starts to flow down the eastern side of the range. As it descends, it warms itself by compression. This newly warmed air travels a considerable distance before it again becomes heavy with moisture, where it converges with other moisture laden air flowing inland from around the southern end of the Olympics. These bodies of precipitation usually converge off the lower end and eastern side of Puget Sound.
Sequim, because of its sheltered position close to the north end of the Olympics, is favored with dry air. The town gets a good flow of warmed mountain air, but before it has taken on much moisture. It is also under the influence of other air currents, which disperse clouds and prevent fog from forming. Only about three or four days of fog are expected annually. In addition, Sequim is almost completely protected from the onslaught of southwesterly storms that often blast the upper Puget Sound region.

Rain maps and rainfall records, kept since the early part of the nineteenth century, indicate that one can expect an increase in rainfall of about 1.6 inches per mile as you travel west from Sequim, and an increase of about 1 inch traveling in the opposite direction. The "Blue Hole" extends about six miles west and seven miles east from Sequim, and from the Olympic foothills to the Strait of Juan de Fuca.

November through January are traditionally the wettest months in Sequim, averaging from about three inches in December to a little less than two inches in January. The area's driest period is from July to September.

Protection Island - it is "for the birds"

PROTECTION ISLAND Protection Island is that island most residents of greater Diamond Point have seen. The island is off limits to practically everyone. It is itself protected. The island got its name from the fact that it protected the beautiful bay beyond it. Early Spanish and English visited the island and it was long used by the British navy as a source for replacements for damaged masts and spars on their sailing ships. The local natives decided that the lack of drinking water was a drawback but they would visit the island to hunt and gather berries and then leave. The white man tried to develop the island from 1861 until 1868 but could not solve the water problem. Man used and abused the island for years. Farming, a research laboratory, a part of coastal defense, a hunting preserve are just a few of the activities tried to make economic use of the island. In 1982 The island was declared a National Wildlife Refuge. More than 70% of the entire seabird population of the Strait of Juan de Fuca and Puget Sound are born here. The island is constantly bombarded by wind and there is a constant din created by the gulls. Protection Island is "for the birds", seals, and other wildlife.Boats cannot come closer to the island than 200 yards and aircraft no closer than 2,000 feet. There is no public access. U.S Fish and Wildlife has the responsibility to maintain this National Wildlife Refuge.

Traffic delays scheduled for Hood Canal Bridge
SHINE – Drivers can expect delays up to 10 minutes on the Hood Canal Bridge between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m., Monday, February 4 as surveyors from Kiewit-General (K-G) install brass monuments at each end of the bridge.
The monuments, 3-inch hubs bearing a Washington State Department of Transportation stamp, number and a center point for surveying reference, will be used by K-G and WSDOT to align the new transitions spans, roadway, girders and pontoons when they are installed in May-June 2009.
The survey work is being done in conjunction with the ongoing Hood Canal Bridge retrofit and replacement project which will improve the existing structure, making it safer and more reliable. All plants are pre-ordered and orders are accepted beginning January 7, 2008 through February 15, 2008. Orders must be a minimum of 30 plants. Plants are available for pick-up on March 1, 2008 at a location east of Port Angeles.
